Physician Discipline

Physicians may be subject to investigations and disciplinary charges in relation to the practice of medicine. Disciplinary charges are extremely serious and should not be taken lightly. The Maryland Board of Physicians has the power to revoke a doctor’s license to practice medicine, to place a physician on probation as well as to implement other discipline. Disciplinary Orders are generally placed online and are open to the general public. A disciplinary finding of any nature may adversely impact a physician’s ability to find employment and eligibility to accept payments from insurance companies.

Even if a healthcare provider has done nothing wrong, a letter providing notice of an investigation or formal charges must be treated with the utmost care and attention and must not be taken lightly or ignored.  It is important to retain an attorney from the outset as the Board of Physicians places significant weight in the contents of a physician’s response to an inquiry letter. Additionally, the Board of Physicians will often schedule an interview with the physician early in the process.
